Marmore Falls: a day trip to Europe's tallest man-made waterfall

An hour from Villa Vacanze Valentina stands a spectacle the Romans built 2,300 years ago that still leaves people speechless: the Marmore Falls, a 165-metre drop in three leaps — the tallest man-made waterfall in Europe and, by many accounts, the world. But mind the detail that surprises everyone: the falls run on a timetable. Arrive at the wrong moment and you will find a trickle. A waterfall built by the Romans

In 271 BC the consul Manius Curius Dentatus had the Curiano Channel dug to divert the river Velino — which kept flooding the Rieti plain — and send it plunging off the Marmore cliff into the river Nera below. Thus, as a land-drainage project, Italy's most scenic waterfall was born. Since 1929 its waters have powered a large hydroelectric plant: that is why today the water is "switched on" only in set time slots — and watching it arrive in full flood, the roar rising, is half the show.

Over the centuries it was a fixed stop on the Grand Tour: Lord Byron called it "horribly beautiful" in Childe Harold, and the main viewpoint bears his name; by tradition, many scholars also read Marmore into Dante's Paradise, in the "murmur of a river falling clear from stone to stone".

The two viewpoints and the trails

The park has two entrances, linked by trails, a seasonal shuttle or the outside road:

• Lower Belvedere — the frontal view of the whole drop, the famous one (Byron Belvedere): during full release the water cloud will soak you here — the poncho is not a fashion choice, it is necessary.
• Upper Belvedere — the vertiginous Specola overlook, sheer above the first 83-metre leap.
• Trail 1 "Antico Passaggio" — connects the two belvederes: ~900 metres and over 600 steps through the woods (40 minutes up). Along the way is the Lovers' Balcony, the terrace suspended right beside the jet: visited only on a booked guided tour (€3.50 on top of the ticket, about an hour) and worth every drop you take.
• Trail 5 "La Rupe e l'Uomo" — 1.1 km suitable for everyone, wheelchairs and pushchairs included.

The right moment: the strategy

The trick is to arrive half an hour before the release time, take your spot at the Lower Belvedere and watch the "flood": within minutes the trickle becomes a thundering wall. Then walk up Trail 1 at your own pace, or take the shuttle, and see it all from above. In summer consider Saturday night: the 9 pm floodlit release is a different show altogether, and far less crowded. For the adventurous, the river Nera below the falls is Umbria's rafting capital, with family descents and adrenaline runs led by specialist operators.

Getting there and what to pair it with

From Villa Vacanze Valentina it takes about 50 minutes: motorway to Orte, then the SS675 towards Terni, Terni Est exit and the SS209 Valnerina — the Lower Belvedere is 7 km from Terni. In the same day you can pair it with Lake Piediluco (the lake that feeds the falls, minutes from the Upper Belvedere), the Roman ruins of Carsulae or underground Narni.

Marmore is the perfect "out-of-region" day trip from Villa Vacanze Valentina: leave after breakfast, return for a swim.
