The Monster Park of Bomarzo — the Sacro Bosco, the "Sacred Wood" commissioned in 1552 by Vicino Orsini — is considered the oldest sculpture park of the modern world: the Ogre with its gaping mouth, the war elephant, the Leaning House. Day-trippers from Rome drive an hour there and an hour back; sleep at our place and you are there in 10 minutes, at opening time, while the wood is still silent.

Anyone coming for the Monster Park can sleep in the village itself or in the villages around it. Bassano in Teverina is one of these: from the villa to the Sacro Bosco is 10 minutes by car. Close enough to be there at opening time without rushing, far enough into the countryside to have a 3,000 m² garden and, from mid-May to mid-October, a pool to spend the afternoon by. You sleep in one of the two apartments in the villa, for up to four guests each, or in the wooden cottage for two.

Many people combine Bomarzo and Civita di Bagnoregio in the same trip. From the villa, Civita is 45 minutes away: it is not round the corner, and we will never say it is. It is, though, a comfortable distance for going in the afternoon and being back for dinner. If you want to sleep next to the footbridge to Civita, look in Bagnoregio. Two or three days
around Bomarzo
One day is enough for the Sacro Bosco, not for what surrounds it. On the first day, the Monster Park in the morning and the afternoon in the garden. On the second, Vitorchiano 15 minutes away and Villa Lante in Bagnaia at 20; or Viterbo, at 25. On the third, if there is one, Civita di Bagnoregio or Lake Bolsena. In the evening you cook: the apartments have a full kitchen, and in the garden there is the outdoor kitchen with barbecue, shared by the three accommodations. Breakfast is not served: in the house you will find a coffee corner with capsules.

About 10 minutes by car. Villa Vacanze Valentina is in Bassano in Teverina, the neighbouring village: we are the ideal place to stay if you want to visit the Sacro Bosco just as it opens, while the wood is still quiet.
How long does a visit to the Monster Park take?

Is the Monster Park suitable for children?
Very much so: stone ogres to climb inside, the Leaning House that throws you off balance, elephants and dragons. It is one of the favourite outings for the families who stay with us — and in summer the pool is waiting when you get back.
Do I need to book Sacro Bosco tickets in advance?
The park is open all year round and tickets are normally bought on site; on spring weekends and public holidays it is best to arrive at opening time. As our guests, you always get the latest information when you arrive.

Where should we stay to visit Viterbo and Bomarzo together?
Halfway between them. From Bassano in Teverina the Monster Park is 10 minutes away and Viterbo 25: you can see them on two different days, or on the same day, and come back to the countryside in the evening.
How many nights is it worth staying?
With one night you see the Monster Park at an easy pace. With two or three you add Vitorchiano, Viterbo and Civita di Bagnoregio, and there is still time for the garden and, in summer, for the pool.
Is the pool open all year round?
No: from mid-May to mid-October, 8 am to 10 pm, and it is shared by the three accommodations. The villa itself is open all year round, with heated accommodation: the Monster Park can be visited in every season.
