Autumn in Orvieto, 50 minutes from the villa: Frantoi Aperti in Umbria from 17 October to 15 November and Choco Italia on 5-8 November 2026. Near Rome.
Some towns are for visiting in summer and for living in come autumn. Orvieto is one of them. Once the coaches thin out, the tufa cliff slips back into its own pace: the cathedral in low afternoon light, workshop doors left ajar, woodsmoke drifting down the lanes. If you live in Rome, it is one of the easiest autumn escapes — a weekend away from Rome that starts in Umbria and ends in the countryside of Tuscia, about fifty minutes down the road.
This year Orvieto's autumn has two dates worth noting: Frantoi Aperti in Umbria, five weekends devoted to the new olive oil, and Choco Italia, the artisan chocolate market, in the town square in November.
Frantoi Aperti in Umbria 2026: 17 October to 15 November
The 29th edition of Frantoi Aperti — "open olive mills" — runs from 17 October to 15 November 2026, across five weekends. It is organised by the Strada dell'Olio e.v.o. Dop Umbria, the Umbrian olive oil route: working mills open to visitors, guided tastings of the new oil, lunches at the mill and dinners with dedicated menus, walks and treks among the olive groves, bike rides.
An honest note. At the end of September the town-by-town programme is only partly out, and Orvieto and its neighbouring villages are not on it yet: the official site says the rest is coming soon. So before you set off, check the events programme by town on the Frantoi Aperti website. The hills around Orvieto are one of the Umbria PDO oil areas, and in those weeks the mills are working flat out either way.
Where to stay
Villa Vacanze Valentina is in Bassano in Teverina, in the green heart of Tuscia: two apartments in the villa and a cottage for two.
Choco Italia on tour: Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 November
In the Comune di Orvieto's 2026 events calendar, Choco Italia on tour is in Piazza della Repubblica from 5 to 8 November. It is a travelling show dedicated to artisan chocolate: chocolatiers from several regions, stalls of bars, pralines and specialities to taste. For children it is the easiest part of the day. For adults, a good excuse to linger in the square.
On the weekend of 7 and 8 November the two overlap: new oil in the Umbrian mills, chocolate in town. Stall opening times are not yet published — check the town's "Orvieto Always On" calendar closer to the dates.

A slow day in Orvieto
The heart of any visit is the Duomo. Its Gothic façade, begun in the early fourteenth century to a design by Lorenzo Maitani, changes colour through the day; inside, the San Brizio Chapel holds Luca Signorelli's Last Judgement. In autumn the afternoon light rakes across the façade: it is worth passing back through the square before you leave.
At the other end of town is the Pozzo di San Patrizio, St Patrick's Well, commissioned by Pope Clement VII after the Sack of Rome in 1527 and designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger: two spiral staircases that wind around each other without ever meeting, 248 steps down to the water. Children love counting them — a little less on the way back up.
Opening times, tickets and the step-by-step route we follow ourselves are in our article Orvieto in a day, checked in September 2026.
The evening, in the countryside
Part of the pleasure of a day in Orvieto is the drive back. You come down off the cliff as the early dark falls, cross from Umbria into Lazio, and after about fifty minutes you are among olive trees and hazel groves again. A bottle of new oil on the table, bread, a fire going: dinner is almost made. If the oil has caught your interest, the Lazio side has its own mills and festivals — we cover them in New olive oil in Tuscia.
