Just 40 minutes from Villa Vacanze Valentina, Lago di Bolsena (Lake Bolsena) is Europe's largest volcanic lake and one of Lazio's best-loved summer destinations. Water clear enough to swim in, well-equipped shores, two islands to explore and medieval villages running right down to the water's edge.

The best beaches

Bolsena, Capodimonte and Marta are the best-equipped lakeside towns, with free beaches and lidos. The water is shallow and safe even for children. In July and August the water temperature is ideal for swimming.

The islands of Bisentina and Martana

The two islands at the centre of the lake are botanical and historical gems: reachable by boat from Bolsena, they hold medieval churches, gardens and unspoilt nature. Isola Bisentina in particular is famous for its papal chapels and the scent of orange blossom that drifts through its woods.

Water sports

The lake is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. Several lidos offer equipment hire. Bolsena's calm, open waters are ideal for beginners too.

The villages around the lake

Besides Bolsena — with its medieval castle and lively lakefront — Capodimonte, Montefiascone (famous for its Est! Est!! Est!!! wine) and Gradoli are well worth a visit. Every town has restaurants serving lake fish — grilled coregone (lake whitefish), stewed pike, eel — the jewels of Viterbo's lakeside cooking.

How to plan your day

Morning: beach and a swim, with breakfast at one of the lakefront bars. Afternoon: a boat trip to the islands, or water sports. Evening: a lake-fish dinner at one of the historic restaurants in Bolsena or Capodimonte.
