Lake Bolsena in summer: beaches, water sports and islands to explore

Forty minutes from Villa Vacanze Valentina, Lake Bolsena is Tuscia's seaside — only quieter, cleaner and ringed by medieval villages instead of endless beach clubs. It is Europe's largest volcanic lake: 114.5 km² of water inside the caldera of the Volsini volcanoes, which collapsed over 300,000 years ago leaving a perfect amphitheatre with two islands at its centre. The beaches: black sand and excellent water

The lake's shores are of dark volcanic sand, mostly free public beaches. Water quality is among the best in Italy: in the Lazio Region's 2025 classification, 27 out of 28 bathing points were rated "excellent". In summer the water reaches 26–28 degrees: no courage required.

• For families: the beaches of Marta and Capodimonte on the southern shore — sandy bottoms sloping gently, almost stone-free.
• The widest: Cornos beach, between Marta and Montefiascone, free and dog-friendly.
• With facilities: beach clubs and rentals cluster in Bolsena, Capodimonte and Marta.

A local's warning: most beaches have no lifeguard, and the wind on the lake can change quickly — with children, stay where you can stand.

New for 2026: Bisentina Island is open

Bisentina Island, the Farnese family's secret garden, is open to the public again: 2026 visits run from 20 June to 1 November (closed Mondays and Wednesdays), with online booking mandatory. The guided tour lasts about two and a half hours among the church of Saints James and Christopher, Renaissance chapels and centuries-old holm oaks; the boat leaves from Bolsena or Capodimonte (return €20 adults, €15 children). Alternatively, Navigazione Alto Lazio runs lake cruises from Bolsena's marina: a circumnavigation of the islands (~1.5 h, €14) and a sunset tour with aperitivo on board.

The smaller sister, Martana Island, remains private and can only be admired from the water: it was there, in 535 AD, that Amalasuntha, queen of the Goths, was murdered — a story the boatmen still tell.

Water sports: gentle-wind paradise

Bolsena is perfect for trying water sports without ocean waves: sailing, windsurfing, SUP, kayaking, up to wakeboarding and water skiing. In Bolsena you will find the historic Yacht Club (boat, canoe and windsurf rental from May to October), Rara Factory for sailing boats, Hobie Cats and skippered outings, and the Surfcamp for windsurf courses at every level.

The villages not to miss

• Bolsena — the lake's capital: in the basilica of Santa Cristina the Eucharistic miracle of 1263 took place, from which the feast of Corpus Domini was born — celebrated every year with a spectacular flower-carpet procession.
• Marta — the fishermen's village, boats pulled up along the lakefront and the octagonal thirteenth-century Clock Tower above.
• Capodimonte — a promontory reaching into the water, crowned by the Farnese Rocca: the most elegant lakefront.
• Montefiascone — the "balcony of Tuscia" at 600 metres: from the ruins of the Popes' Rocca the view embraces the whole lake.

At the table: coregone, sbroscia and the wine with three exclamation marks

The lake's cooking is worth the trip on its own: oven-baked coregone (lake whitefish), sbroscia — the fishermen's humble soup of lake fish, potatoes and wild mint — and the eel that Dante mentions in Purgatory: pope Martin IV ended up among the gluttons precisely for the eels of Bolsena drowned in vernaccia. Pair everything with Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone: legend has it that in 1111 bishop Defuk's servant marked the inns with good wine with an "Est", and here he wrote three with exclamation marks. His master, from too much drinking, never left Montefiascone — his tombstone says so.

Where to stay: the lake without the lakeside crowds

Sleeping right on Bolsena in summer means high prices and full houses. The smart move is to base yourself at Villa Vacanze Valentina in Bassano in Teverina: the lake is 40–50 minutes away, but within the same radius you have Civita di Bagnoregio (just 20 minutes from the lake: combine them in one day), the Park of the Monsters of Bomarzo and the Popes' Thermal Baths — and in the evening you return to your own pool, in the silence of the countryside.
