Driving back from the South? A one-night stop by the A1, 15 minutes from Orte

There is a moment on the way home when the South is behind you and only hours of motorway lie ahead. Anyone driving back toward Florence, Bologna or Milan after a holiday knows that tiredness: the loaded car, the children who have had enough of their car seats, and the temptation to grit your teeth and arrive home in the middle of the night. There is a gentler — and safer — alternative: break the journey with an overnight stop, halfway, in the green. The right place to do it is a quarter of an hour from the Autostrada del Sole, Italy's main north–south motorway.

A step away from the A1 Orte exit

Look at the map of the drive home. Once past Rome, the most tiring stretch is still ahead: the Apennine climb between Florence and Bologna, bends and tunnels you would rather not tackle after many hours behind the wheel, perhaps in the dark. Right on that corridor, on the A1, is the Orte exit — and fifteen minutes from it, on a hilltop of olive trees, stands Villa Vacanze Valentina. From here it is about two hours to Florence, three to Bologna, just under five to Milan: distances that feel completely different when you tackle them rested the next morning. It is the stop that splits a long drive in two, adding only a few minutes to it.

A night worth twice as much

The good thing about stopping here is that you step straight into the countryside. You arrive in the afternoon or the evening, put down the bags, and the first thing you notice is the silence: this is real countryside, far from the noise. The pool is waiting for you — a swim after hours in the car brings you back to life — with the gazebos, the loungers, the lawn. There is nothing to plan: the only thing to do is stop driving, and sleep, for once, in a real house.

Dinner happens right here, at the barbecue

After a day on the motorway, the last thing you want is to get back in the car to look for a restaurant.
