There is a moment, between late August and the equinox, when Tuscia is at its best and hardly anyone notices. The holidays end, the coaches thin out, the heat turns gentle — and the countryside is still there, in the most beautiful light of the year. If you are wondering where to go in September near Rome for a weekend or a slow week, the answer lies an hour north of the ring road: September is the month we recommend to guests who can choose. Here is why — with real driving times, from people who live here.

Why September is the sweetest month

The days still belong to summer: short sleeves, sun that warms until sunset, the pool tempting in the middle hours. But the air has changed: evenings call for a jumper, the light turns low and golden, the freshly ploughed fields smell of earth. Above all, the crowds have gone: the villages return to their inhabitants, you park where in mid-August you could not even drive through, and restaurants have tables free. It is Tuscia as it used to be — and as those who live here prefer it.

The lake belongs to the few again

Lake Bolsena, Europe's largest volcanic lake, saves its best for September: the water keeps the warmth stored up over summer, the dark volcanic-sand beaches empty out, the lakeside villages slow down. The most comfortable shores for swimming are still those between Marta and Capodimonte, where the bottom slopes gently; the waters are classified excellent for bathing at almost every monitored point. From the villa it is about 40 minutes: beaches, islands and villages are in our lake guide.

Villages without coaches

September is the right month for Civita di Bagnoregio: the bridge empties early and at sunset the badlands light up for a handful of spectators — staying nearby means enjoying it after the coaches have left (40–45 minutes from the villa). Ten minutes from home are the Monster Park of Bomarzo, whose woods empty out in September, and Vitorchiano, suspended on its cliff. For a full tour there is our three-day itinerary.

The hot springs begin their season

As the evenings cool, the hot water rising from the ground around Viterbo starts to make sense again: from September onwards the thermal springs — the free pools in the countryside as much as the monumental baths — are at their best. A hot open-air soak as the light fades is one of the simplest, most memorable experiences in Tuscia, and it is half an hour's drive away.

Harvest month

September in the Teverina is harvest time: grapes are picked along the rows, the villages get ready for the olive-mill season, the table changes pace. You need no programme: drive through the hills with the windows down, stop in a village at aperitivo time, buy whatever the countryside offers that day. It is the slowest kind of travel there is — and exactly what this land is made for.

Your base: a real house in the silence

The villa stands in Bassano in Teverina, on a quiet hilltop: Rome is an hour away (the A1 exit at Orte is 15 minutes), and every place on this page is within day-trip range. September here is the month of couples: for you there is the Casetta degli Innamorati, our wooden hideaway for two, and the idea of a romantic getaway in Tuscia is already written. Families have the two apartments in the villa, with the pool for the warm hours. For dates, write to us.
